Is it time for a Mummy MOT?

Becoming a mum is, for most women, an intensely joyful experience. But pregnancy and the act of giving birth can take their toll on a body, leading to a lack of confidence and any one of several physical issues.

While a new mum’s sole concern is rightly the health of their baby – and there are a host of resources on hand to help through the first few months – the physical trauma they themselves have been through also needs careful consideration.

During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles go through significant changes and, after childbirth, they can remain weak and separated. Up to half of all women experience weakness in both the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles after pregnancy, which can cause instability or poor core strength.

This can lead to women developing pelvic or back pain, bladder or bowel problems, and sexual dysfunction.

What is a Mummy MOT?

A Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal examination aimed at assessing the physical well-being of mums after childbirth. This comprehensive evaluation goes beyond the standard six-week check-up, offering a detailed assessment of musculoskeletal and pelvic floor health.

It’s designed to help mums regain their physical strength, flexibility, and overall well-being after pregnancy and childbirth.

It’s recommended that women have an initial assessment after their 6-8 week GP check but at The Oast we also treat women who gave birth years ago and may still have a tummy gap or related pelvic floor issues.

What does a Mummy MOT include?

A Mummy MOT includes exercises to rebuild core strength, supporting overall stability, and reducing the risk of debilitating back pain.

At The Oast, your one-hour assessment includes:

  • Full postural screen
  • Pelvic floor assessment
  • Abdominal screen for any separation
  • Screening for bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction

After the assessment, we send out a written report on the findings as well as education and advice on safe activities such as lifting the baby or pushing a buggy. We also provide a bespoke rehabilitation programme which takes into account all your goals and lifestyle factors.

By addressing post-natal issues early on, a Mummy MOT can help prevent long-term problems and improve overall quality of life.

If you’d like to find out more, our team are always happy to explain the assessment further and answer any questions you may have.
